It has a typical moderate subtropical climate. The island is on the Tropic of Cancer, is long and narrow, lying from east to west. As a result, it is refreshed by the trade winds and sea breezes. The eastern region has a warmer climate than the west and there are basically two seasons: rainy ( April, May and June) and the dry season. The average temperature is 24,6º C (76,3º F). Summer 25º C (77º F). Winter 22º C (71,6º F).
There are 6,300 species of Cuban flora;of these 51% are endemic, with 33 areas of very typical vegatation. Of the endemic species the most notable are the cork palm (Microcycas calocoma), azulejo (Magnolia cubensis), barrel palm (Colpothrinax wrightii), dracaena de Moa (Dracaena cubensis), Cuban pine (Pinus cubensis), erizo (Melocactus matanzanus) and the carnivorous plant (Pinguicola lignicola).
The following factors have influenced this high percentage of endemic plants, and the great diversity of Cuban flora and fauna : high insularity, rainy tropical climate, large areas of alluvial and limestone, big areas of quartz sands and an interesting geomorphological structure in which was formed a gigantic structure of caverns, in which can be found enormous salons and galleries, some of which are flooded, so the very unusual fauna is made up of anthopoids, bats, fish, (some of them blind), amphibians and reptiles amongst others.
There are no creatures lethal to man in Cuba. Of the most well known Cuban fauna there are more than 16 500 species; 42 species of mammals, 350 birds, 121 reptiles, 46 amphibians, 7 493 insects, 1 300 spiders y 2900 molluscs and the two smallest species in the world: the sapito (Sminthillus limbatus) and the zunzuncito (Mellisuga helenae).
Its elongated shape and orientation from east to west conpire to convert it into a paradise of beautiful beaches, virgin keys coral reefs full of fish, and the people are hards working, friendly, and cultured, continually striving to build a future for the country.
